Welcome to the website of Leagrave Youth Work Action Group (LYWAG), here you can find out about our events for young people in north Luton.

LYWAG began in 2003 out of St Luke’s Church, Leagrave by holding a youth fair to bring together the different youth organisations and introduce them to the youths in the area, ending the night with a disco for under 18’s. LYWAG used this event as an opportunity to consult the youths of the area, out of this the Rock Nights emerged - Luton's first opportunity for the 14+ age group to see live bands.

Once every half term LYWAG hold a night of live bands for the youths of the area to watch, dance and enjoy in a safe and fun environment. The security of the events is supplied by Police Cadets working side by side with volunteers. Having the Cadets and Community Police Officers engaging with the youths of the area has proved very successful at breaking down the barriers and prejudice between police and young people and as a result, we hope, create greater trust between the police and a previously sceptical area of the community.

The Rock Nights offer young bands the opportunity to perform to a capacity crowd of young people to try out and develop their skills as musicians in front of an audience. In fact several Luton bands played their first gig at a LYWAG event. The Rock Night’s have consistently produced well over capacity demand for tickets and are now always a sell out. Core to LYWAG’s aims is ensuring such events are accessible to all and we have managed to maintain low ticket prices of only £2.50.

For those with differing musical tastes, LYWAG introduced Planet Disco in 2008 and a wide range of music is played, including dance, RnB, Charts, Rock and Indie. Admission for this is also £2.50.

A new initiative between LYWAG and Luton Libraries is the Leagrave Reading group which takes place at St Luke's Church, Leagrave. This event is totally free. Email us at lywag@hotmail.co.uk for more details.
